The game

What it is

Loony Laps is a single-player VR and mixed reality kart racing game built around the fantasy of having an elaborate die-cast racing set right in front of you.

Players race miniature cars across 29 handcrafted tracks filled with loops, jumps, magnetic walls, branching paths, oversized obstacles and unexpected hazards. Cars can be smashed, thrown into the air, sent through strange portals and even transformed as races descend into increasingly ridiculous chaos.

Despite the playful premise, the miniature world is rendered with a deliberately realistic toy-like look. Cars feature detailed paintwork, reflective windows, wheels and materials designed to make them feel like actual die-cast models when viewed up close or held in the player's hands.

Loony Laps can be played in both virtual reality and mixed reality. In VR, the tracks live inside a detailed virtual environment. In MR, the racing set enters the player's real room, where the track can be picked up, repositioned and viewed from different angles around the space.

The game includes a Championship mode alongside Quick Race and Time Trial, with new cars and tracks to discover as players progress.

Tiny cars. Big tracks. Ridiculous racing.

Details

What's in it

  • 29 handcrafted tracks built around loops, jumps, magnetic sections, branching routes, moving machinery and oversized hazards.
  • A garage of detailed die-cast toy cars, designed with realistic paint, reflections, windows, wheels and materials so they feel like physical miniature models when viewed up close.
  • Tracks that fork, stack, loop upside down and run up walls on magnetic sections.
  • Oversized hazards and surprises including projectiles, giant rolling objects, moving obstacles, portals and transformations.
  • Some portals simply teleport you. Others can turn your car into a squeaky toy animal for the rest of the lap.
  • Get hit by certain hazards and your car can turn solid chrome for a few seconds, becoming temporarily invincible.
  • Drive by grabbing a virtual steering wheel and physically steering with the Meta Quest controllers.
  • Between races, pick up the cars and trophies, inspect them closely and turn them over in your hands.
  • In mixed reality, bring the miniature racing set into your real environment, walk around it and reposition the track within your available space.
  • Three ways to race: Championship, Quick Race and Time Trial.
  • Designed for short, replayable sessions and accessible arcade racing rather than simulation.
How you play

Game modes

Championship

Race through a structured series of events, progress through the championship and unlock additional cars and tracks along the way.

Quick Race

Choose a car and track and jump directly into a race without progressing through the Championship.

Time Trial

Race against the clock and work to improve your best times across the game's tracks.

Two ways to play

VR & mixed reality

Loony Laps supports both fully virtual reality and mixed reality play.

In VR, races take place inside a dedicated virtual environment built around the miniature racing setup.

In mixed reality, the racing set appears inside the player's real environment. Players can physically move around it, view the race from different angles and reposition the track within their available space.

Mixed reality is designed as part of the experience rather than simply using passthrough as a background.

Art direction

A realistic miniature world

Loony Laps uses a realistic miniature-toy aesthetic rather than a cartoon or low-poly presentation.

Cars are designed to resemble detailed die-cast models, with realistic paint, reflections, windows, wheels and surface materials. Tracks and environments follow the same philosophy: playful in concept, but physically convincing when viewed at miniature scale inside the headset.

The goal is for a car held inches from the player's face to feel less like a game asset and more like a real miniature model sitting in their hand.

Background

About Loony Laps

Loony Laps began with a simple idea: what if a miniature racing set in VR felt less like a videogame viewed from above and more like a real toy world sitting directly in front of you?

That idea shaped everything from the scale of the tracks to the detailed die-cast look of the cars, the ability to physically interact with the miniature world, and the mixed reality mode that places the racing set inside the player's own room.

The result is an arcade racing game that combines the immediacy of classic miniature racers with the physical presence and sense of scale that VR and mixed reality can provide.

Inspirations

Loony Laps draws inspiration from classic arcade and miniature racing games, particularly the immediate, playful style of older top-down racers, while using VR and mixed reality to turn the racing world into a physical miniature space around the player.

The developer

Who made it

Loony Laps is created by Paulo Cunha, a solo developer based in Guarulhos, Brazil, with a background in film and visual effects.

Paulo handles the game's programming, design, tracks, visual presentation and overall production independently. Loony Laps has been developed as a long-term personal project combining his interest in virtual reality, miniature racing games and visually convincing physical worlds.

Development began in 2002.

A note from the developer

"I've always loved miniature racing games, but VR gave me the opportunity to approach them in a completely different way. I didn't just want small cars on a screen — I wanted the player to feel like there was an actual die-cast racing set sitting in front of them.

A big part of Loony Laps became getting that physical feeling right: looking closely at the cars, seeing the reflections on the paint and windows, watching them race around a track at toy scale, and eventually bringing that whole world into the player's real room through mixed reality.

I'm developing the game completely solo, so it has grown one track, one car and one ridiculous idea at a time."
